Starting Points
Starting points are stimuli to prompt discussion on a topic relevant to the Make it count with Indigenous Learners community. Starting Points may include an image or video.
A new Starting Point begins on the home page and is linked in the Discussion area of the Forum. One way to go to the Forum is by clicking on the Discussion link in the Forum menu in the top navigation bar. You will come to a screen that shows all the discussion threads for each of the Starting Points; you can choose the relevant thread, as well as browse all others. The archive of all of the Starting Points can also be accessed via the Starting Points link on the menu in the top navigation bar.
Numeracy Circles
The Numeracy Circles process provides a framework for students to be presented with a problem to solve within a familiar context and, by playing different roles, students are involved in digging out and thinking about the mathematics and numeracies in different ways. With their new learning they are encouraged to consider new contexts for applying the newly learned mathematics.
Powerful learners
Powerful learners connect ideas together. They can compare and contrast concepts, and they can transfer learning from one context to another. They can devise their own solutions to problems, and they can explain their thinking to others.
Maths as Storytelling
The Maths as storytelling (MAST) approach utilises Indigenous knowledge of symbols (within, e.g., sport, driving, art and dance) as a starting point for building understanding of arithmetic symbolism in a way that can be easily extended to algebra symbolism.
Mandalany
The Kit – Mandalany (Man-da-lanj) caters for Prep - Year 1 developed with Mathematical activities which focus on Indigenous Language,“Jiddabul” the language of the Herberton area. The garburrun garburru – 6 maui identify the 6 elements within the Kit.
