Community

Welcome to the community website for our Connect with Maths community 'Make it count with Indigenous Learners'. All the resources of the community housed on the previous platform have been transferred to this site to bring all Connect with Maths community members together. Members of this community will be able to easily access other  Connect with Maths communities relevant to your students.

The 'Make it count with Indigenous Learners' community aims to build support for educators providing a forum to discuss and share experiences in preparing all students on their paths to life success through mathematics. As a profession we all agree that all students are entitled to engaging learning programs drawn from a challenging curriculum that addresses their individual learning needs and, in this context, culturally responsive mathematics pedagogies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Make it count with Indigenous Learners Forum

The heart of the Make it count with Indigenous Learners community is the Forum where educators have an opportunity to seek and provide support, find and share resources and interact with colleagues on important issues. Topics will focus on pedagogies to challenge students so that they value mathematics and achieve success in mathematics regardless of their background and previous learning experiences.

The Make it count with Indigenous Learners community is lead by Connect with Maths Community Leaders and active members who are experienced educators. They wish to join with all members to exchange ideas and strategies help meet the demands in this important area.  Community Leaders and active members provide advice, lead professional learning events and contribute relevant resources.

Forum discussions may emanate from a "Starting Point" highlighted on the community home page or may be any information raised by any member in the Forum. Professional engagement can highlight the various needs of all students, particularly Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students. Engagement will emphasise a culturally responsive learning environment in mathematics that extends beyond the classroom to enable our young people to pursue study, career and life success.

Professional engagement is a requirement of all in the teaching profession. We hope that all educators will find this community a valuable means for engaging with colleagues as one way to build professional knowledge and practice as active members of this community.

Community objectives

This community website seeks to offer a forum for educators working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners in mathematics education. The community offers a forum for professional engagement; teaching and learning resources and a series of online professional learning sessions with passionate educators and experts in the field throughout the school year.

Community Leaders

Community Leadership and active input from its members are the essentials of an effective online community. This community comprises educators who wish to advance the life success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander learners through professional conversations and providing resources helpful in building the knowledge, understanding and practice of mathematics teaching.

Community Leaders contribute by leading activities in the community program. The hub of the Make it count with Indigenous learners' community is the Forum. Community Leaders can initiate a topic for discussion, provide a resource for review or illustrate examples of best practice. The community members can respond and determine the nature of the activity that is relevant and valuable to them. An effective online community has a diversity of member expertise, experience and perspectives. Engagement should be valuable and enjoyable.
